Importance of keeping kids hydrated

Growing children are full of energy and hustle. Every activity they do-whether it be jumping, running, climbing, or playing, drains them out of essential nutrients and, most importantly, fluids that need their body to function. Parents with desk jobs might not realise how quickly their child might get exhausted. Expert advice is that do not wait for your child to ask for water. As per Dr. Holly Benjamin, who is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Chicago, children are at least 3% dehydrated by the time they ask for water.

New mothers make sure their babies are fed in short intervals, but once the kids grow up, they tend to miss out on their water intake. The reason is simple kids love colourful drinks buzzing with taste. Since they are used to milk since birth, one of the best health drinks for kids apart from water has to be milk drinks. Parents should go for brands that do not contain added sugar and are rich in vitamin D, calcium, iron, and RDA protein. These nutrients and minerals will not only keep them hydrated but contribute positively to their physical growth, socio-emotional capabilities, and cognitive development.

Why is it important to stay hydrated?

Surprising as it may sound, teenagers need as much water as adults. Even toddlers aged 1 to 3 must-have four cups of fluids a day. Fluids, especially water, are extremely important for the key processes of the body to function properly.

How to spot signs of dehydration in children?

The last thing on a child’s mind when he is simply playing around and having the time of his life would be having water. But we must ensure it doesn’t become a habit, or else it could lead to mild or severe dehydration.

About 2% or more dehydration is called mild dehydration and can lead to dark yellow urine, nausea, dizziness, and low physical performance. In the long run, this could lead to constipation, dry skin, irritability, and excessive sleepiness.

How can I make my child drink more fluids?

A common concern among parents is that children are so zealous and active that they forget having water or have little amounts when offered. Going by personal experiences, here are some health tips for children to help your child develop the good habit of keeping himself hydrated-

  1. Make pure fruit popsicles: Children love popsicles, and there’s no better way of feeding them fruit juices. Make small ones, so they don’t go to waste.
  2. Use sippers: Get a sipper of their favourite cartoon character or superhero and ask them to carry it while they are out or playing indoors. They will certainly gulp it all down.
  3. Use milk powders: If your kid frowns over having milk, get a milk powder (preferably unflavoured) to enhance the taste and health factor.
